After emerging from the tunnels underground City Hall the participants travel on foot to the end of Navy Pier and the third checkpoint, where they collect their canoes and carry them back to the beginning of the pier. At the shore, they put the boats in the Chicago River for a 15-mile paddle up stream to the Forest Preserve near the city limits.
