Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu - February 2018
The church takes its name from the Latin word gallicantu, meaning cock’s crow. This commemorates Peter's rejection of Jesus three times “...before the cock crows…” (Mark 14:30). This spot is believed to be the location of High Priest Caiaphas' palace, and these steps date back to the time of Jesus, making it highly possible that he actually walked here.

A Byzantine shrine dedicated to Peter's repentance was erected on this spot in 457 AD, but it was destroyed by the Fatimid caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah in 1010. Then in 1102, the Crusaders rebuilt the chapel and gave it the name Gallicantu. The church again fell into ruin but was rebuilt in 1931 as it currently stands, with its golden rooster sitting high on the sanctuary roof.
